The Adani Group and Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan. The MoU was formalised in Thimphu in the presence of top Bhutanese officials, including the Prime Minister and Energy Minister.

Building on the Wangchhu Project Partnership

This new agreement follows their ongoing collaboration on the Wangchhu Hydropower Project (570/900 MW), where DGPC owns 51% and Adani 49%. The latest MoU plans to expand this partnership by identifying new hydropower and pumped storage projects and implementing them in phases.

Management Take on Business Development

Naresh Telgu, COO (PSP & Hydro), Adani Green Hydro Ltd., stated, “This partnership reflects our deep commitment to developing clean energy infrastructure that enhances regional energy security.” “Together with DGPC, we are enabling Bhutan to harness its hydropower potential and export reliable green energy to India. This is a powerful example of cross-border collaboration in pursuit of shared sustainable development goals.”

Strengthening Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Plans

The collaboration supports Bhutan’s target of generating an extra 20,000 MW of renewable energy by 2040. The country is also working to expand into solar and geothermal sources while encouraging investment and innovation through partnerships.

Boosting Cross-Border Energy Trade and Market Access

Adani will help Bhutan by ensuring steady power offtake and connecting Bhutan’s power with India’s electricity markets. This move will not only boost Bhutan’s role in regional energy trade but also deepen economic ties with India. DGPC and Adani also finalised the Shareholders’ Agreement for the Wangchhu Project, marking another step forward in their partnership.
