In a major step to strengthen India’s digital identity system, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated over 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers linked to people who have passed away. This move helps to prevent the misuse of identities and ensures the Aadhaar database remains accurate and up to date.

When Did UIDAI Deactivate Aadhaar Numbers?

UIDAI has received around 1.55 crore death records from 24 States and Union Territories through the Civil Registration System (CRS), which is managed by the Registrar General of India (RGI). After validating these records, the deceased's Aadhaar numbers were carefully deactivated.

In regions not yet connected to the CRS, UIDAI has also received 6.7 lakh death records. The process of verifying and deactivating Aadhaar numbers in these areas is currently underway.

New Self-Service Portal for Citizens

To make the process easier for families, UIDAI has introduced a self-service feature on the myAadhaar portal called “Reporting of Death of a Family Member.” This feature, available since June, allows citizens to report a family member’s death by providing:

  • The deceased person’s Aadhaar number
  • The death registration number
  • Basic demographic details
  • Self-authentication by the user

Currently, this service supports 24 CRS-integrated States/UTs, and UIDAI is working to include the remaining regions soon.

Future Plans and Collaborations

UIDAI is also exploring partnerships with banks and other Aadhaar-linked institutions to collect death data more efficiently. Additionally, the authority is working with State governments to verify the status of centenarian Aadhaar holders (aged 100+), to ensure their records are still active and accurate.

Conclusion

These proactive steps by UIDAI highlight its commitment to maintaining a secure, updated, and trustworthy digital ID system for India. Citizens are encouraged to use the myAadhaar portal to report the death of family members using an official death certificate. This helps prevent future misuse and keeps the Aadhaar database clean and reliable.
