In a pointed critique, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that Elon Musk’s business empire, including Tesla and SpaceX, owes its viability to government subsidies. Trump suggested that without this financial backing, Musk would struggle to keep operations running and might even consider leaving the US altogether.

Trump’s Assertion: Musk Dependent on Government Subsidies

Trump, addressing the nation via the social media platform Truth Social on July 1, 2025, questioned the independence of Musk’s ventures. He highlighted the reliance of Tesla’s EV production and SpaceX’s aerospace initiatives on substantial federal support. According to Trump, without these subsidies, Musk would “probably have to close up shop and head back to South Africa.”

Concerns Over the EV Mandate Bill

Trump reiterated his disapproval of mandatory EV adoption, calling it a flawed and costly policy. He pointedly noted that while EVs are suitable for some, forcing all Americans to shift away from internal combustion engines is, in his words, “ridiculous.” This stance is central to his electoral agenda, framing the EV mandate as unnecessary government interference in consumer choice.

Subsidy Benefits Beyond Automobiles

In his post, Trump expanded the subsidy discussion beyond electric vehicles. He accused Musk of amassing benefits from government contracts and funding streams for SpaceX’s rocket launches and Starlink satellite projects. Trump claimed Musk “may get more subsidies than any human being in history,” suggesting that ending these allocations could result in massive federal savings.

Rising Tensions Between Trump and Musk

The timing of Trump’s remarks coincides with a fallout between the two prominent figures, following Musk’s opposition to Trump’s flagship “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”

Once key allies, tensions have escalated, with Musk threatening to establish an “America Party” as an alternative political movement. Musk, who previously played a significant role in the Trump administration, now criticises the financial implications of the new bill, stating it reverses the fiscal discipline achieved under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

A Complicated Relationship

Musk, despite his past endorsement of Trump and an estimated $300 million election contribution, now finds himself at odds with Trump’s evolving policy directions. His criticism of the EV mandate and growing discomfort with excessive government spending expose the fractures in their working relationship.

Conclusion

Trump’s statement that Elon Musk’s enterprises would collapse without federal subsidies intensifies the national conversation on government support for innovation. The political clash also marks a turning point in Musk’s relationship with Trump, reflecting larger debates about fiscal policy and industrial strategy in the US.
