Amid confusion over the observance of Yaum-e-Ashura (Muharram), many individuals were unsure if banks and stock markets in India would remain open on Monday, July 7, 2025. The uncertainty stemmed from whether the day of Ashura would fall on Sunday, July 6, or Monday, July 7.
Here’s a clear update on the operational status of markets and banking services today.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) are fully operational on July 7, 2025. The observance of Ashura took place on Sunday, July 6, which was a standard weekend market closure. Since the holiday fell on a Sunday, there is no trading disruption for Monday.
As per the BSE and NSE trading holiday calendar for 2025, the next scheduled market closure is on August 15 for Independence Day. The last market holiday was on May 1 for Maharashtra Day. There has been no official change or additional holiday announced for July 7.
No, banks across India are open today, July 7. Despite the earlier ambiguity surrounding Muharram’s observance date, Yaum-e-Ashura was officially observed on Sunday, July 6. Therefore, banks are operating on standard business hours today.
Bank closures in July 2025 are regional and date-specific. For instance, July 3 saw closures in Agartala for Kharchi Puja, and July 5 for Guru Hargobind Ji’s Birthday in Jammu and Srinagar. The upcoming holidays include Beh Deinkhlam in Shillong (July 14), Harela in Dehradun (July 16), and Ker Puja in Agartala (July 19).
In addition to regional holidays, banks will also remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays (July 12 and 26) and all Sundays (July 6, 13, 20, and 27).
