US President Donald Trump is set to send tariff notification letters to global trade partners starting Friday, with countries having to begin payments from August 1, 2025. The move follows the conclusion of a 90-day tariff pause, initiated to allow bilateral negotiations with key nations.
With the July 9 deadline approaching, only a few countries have secured trade deals, while the rest face steep unilateral tariffs.
On Liberation Day, the US President announced reciprocal tariffs, targeting over 100 countries, aiming to rebalance US trade deficits and push for domestic manufacturing. Countries with substantial trade surpluses with the US faced tariffs of: Cambodia 49%, Vietnam 46%, Lesotho 50%, China 34%, and India 26%. However, a deal has been done with China and Vietnam.
Trump confirmed that 10 to 12 countries will receive their official tariff letters on July 4, with remaining notifications going out in the following days. He expects complete coverage by July 9. The tariffs will apply globally and take effect from August 1, leaving limited time for countries to negotiate exemptions or trade deals.
As of now, only the UK, Vietnam, and China have concluded trade agreements with the US under the current framework. While talks continue with other countries, Trump stated that he prefers to proceed with formal tariff notifications instead of extending deal-making time. His comments suggest few additional agreements are likely before the July 9 cutoff.

India, facing a proposed 26% tariff, is actively negotiating a last-minute arrangement to avoid the sweeping duties. According to the White House, talks with India are in advanced stages, and announcements could be made soon. As per news reports, Trump has acknowledged the ongoing discussions but remained firm about not extending the July 9 deadline.
The rollout of Trump’s tariff letters marks a pivotal moment in US trade policy, with new import duties reshaping global commerce from August 1. Countries still without agreements face immediate economic repercussions, as the US pursues its protectionist agenda with renewed intensity under the “Liberation Day” framework.
