India’s agriculture sector holds massive export potential, and Union Commerce Minister Shri Piyush Goyal has outlined a clear roadmap for boosting agri exports from ₹4.5 lakh crore to ₹20 lakh crore. Emphasising efficient processing, better packaging, and quality branding, the strategy seeks to make Indian produce globally competitive.

Path to ₹20 Lakh Crore Agri Exports

According to Shri Goyal, India’s agri exports can nearly quadruple if the focus shifts towards modern food processing, branding, and infrastructure. New products like jamun, bottle gourd, litchi, and pineapple are entering global markets, including the UK, Dubai, and Doha. Initiatives like promoting millets during the International Year of Millets have helped position India as a global agri-leader. With increased emphasis on value-added products, Indian farming is primed for an export revolution.

Building Resilience in Farming with Technology and Irrigation

The Minister underlined the importance of a robust supply chain, including seeds, fertilisers, and irrigation equipment. Drip irrigation, combined with smart pumps, is being encouraged to conserve water and boost yield. These energy-efficient pumps, operable via smartphones, optimise water usage and lower electricity costs, an essential factor in a rain-fed agriculture landscape like India.

Supporting Sustainable and Organic Farming Practices

Natural and organic farming are seeing renewed attention, with blockchain-backed certification systems being introduced to boost global trust. Better packaging and improved design are also being supported to help Indian agri goods stand out internationally. The creation of boards like the Turmeric Board and the doubling of coffee exports showcase targeted efforts to scale India’s agri influence.

Empowering Farmers and Strengthening Market Access

Government support includes connecting 1,400 mandis to the e-NAM platform and promoting Farmer Producer Organisations for better access to mechanisation. Under schemes like PM-Kisan Yojana and the ₹1 lakh crore Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, farmers are receiving direct benefits. The Drone Didi initiative has already trained 1.5 lakh women to operate drones for fertiliser spraying, driving rural empowerment.

Conclusion

With a strategic focus on processing, branding, and tech-enabled farming, India’s agri sector is poised to dramatically increase exports. Backed by infrastructure, policy support, and farmer participation, the journey towards ₹20 lakh crore exports is well underway.
