India’s installed solar power capacity has risen by 4,000% over the last decade. The country’s total renewable energy capacity now stands at 227 GW. The update was shared by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, during the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025 in New Delhi.
The manufacturing capacity for solar photovoltaic (PV) modules has increased 38 times. PV cell production capacity has gone up 21 times. Government schemes such as the PM Surya Ghar Yojana and PM Kusum Yojana are focused on rooftop installations and solar pumps for households and agriculture.
Energy storage technologies, including batteries, hydro storage, and geothermal systems, are being prioritised. These are to support an uninterrupted clean energy supply. Goyal also mentioned the role of nuclear energy in the long-term energy mix.
A ₹1 lakh crore fund has been approved to support R&D in battery and storage technologies. The fund will focus on advanced battery chemistries, solid-state and hybrid storage systems, and recycling frameworks. The objective is to scale domestic innovation and reduce import dependence.
Goyal highlighted the need to develop charging infrastructure and battery swapping systems. He said that reducing reliance on specific countries for critical minerals and components is essential. Supply chain resilience was noted as a step towards self-reliance in energy.
Palli village in Jammu & Kashmir was referenced as India’s first carbon-neutral panchayat. The IESW venue, Yashobhoomi, was also mentioned for incorporating rooftop solar systems, wastewater recycling, and energy-efficient design.
