Foxconn has recalled more than 300 Chinese engineers and technicians from its iPhone manufacturing facilities in southern India. The process started nearly two months ago. Most of the remaining foreign staff at the site are now from Taiwan, as per a Bloomberg report.

The company has not released any official statement regarding the withdrawal. Reports suggest the move may be linked to broader restrictions on labour and technology transfers imposed by Chinese authorities.

Impact on Operations

The engineers had been deployed to assist with production setup and worker training at the India facilities. Their sudden exit may affect line efficiency, especially as Foxconn ramps up production for future iPhone models.

As per news reports, China has been discouraging the export of skilled labour, technical expertise, and specialised equipment to other countries. This includes countries like India and Vietnam, which are trying to expand their role in electronics manufacturing.

Apple’s Manufacturing in India

India accounts for about 20% of global iPhone output. Large-scale production in the country began 4 years ago. Apple plans to manufacture a majority of its US-destined iPhones in India by 2026.

Foxconn is constructing a new facility in India to support iPhone production. The company has been expanding its local presence to reduce dependence on China-based manufacturing.

Shift in Supply Chains

The movement of production from China to countries like India began during the US-China trade tensions. This shift has led to tighter export controls by China, covering both raw materials and personnel.

Conclusion

The recall of Chinese engineers from Foxconn’s India operations comes at a time when Apple is working to scale local production. It shows ongoing shifts in global supply chains, influenced by policy changes, labour restrictions, and geopolitical tensions.
