India supplies a significant 70% of vaccines sourced by the World Health Organization (WHO), reaffirming its critical role in global immunisation efforts. This was stated by Ms. Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilisers, during her address at the Second Policymakers’ Forum organised by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC). The minister underscored India’s ability to meet global healthcare demands through its robust pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem.
India’s impact on the pharmaceutical supply chain extends to the United States as well, with 14% of generic drugs imported by the US being manufactured in India. This reflects the trust placed in Indian pharmaceutical firms to deliver quality generics at scale, especially to highly regulated markets.
Ms. Patel highlighted the success of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), which aims to increase access to affordable medicines across India. Jan Aushadhi Kendras, under this scheme, have played a significant role in reducing out-of-pocket healthcare spending for Indian citizens. These centres are designed to deliver cost-effective, high-quality medications to the masses.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, India launched the ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative, supplying vaccines to over 100 partner nations. This humanitarian effort showcased India’s leadership in supporting global health equity and solidified its position as the “pharmacy of the world.”
India exports 70% of its generic pharmaceutical products to highly regulated international markets, a testament to the country’s adherence to stringent quality standards. The country has also attained Maturity Level 3 (ML3) under WHO’s Global Benchmarking Tool (GBT), reflecting the competence and robustness of its drug regulatory system.
India has the largest number of drug manufacturing facilities approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) outside the US. This widespread approval not only supports export growth but also enhances confidence in Indian medicines worldwide.
