Defence Ministry Approves 10 Proposals Worth 1.45 Lakh Crores

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has given a go ahead to a series of substantial procurement proposals amounting to Rs.1,44,716 crore. This approval, which covers ten capital acquisition proposals, is a move towards modernizing India’s Armed Forces and boosting the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard.

Key Procurement Approvals

Among the major acquisitions approved are the Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs), designed to modernize the Indian Army’s tank fleet. These FRCVs will be equipped with advanced features including superior mobility, all-terrain capability, multilayered protection, and precision strike capacity.. 

Additionally, the DAC has cleared the procurement of Air Defence Fire Control Radars. These radars are crucial for detecting and tracking aerial targets and providing accurate firing solutions to counter airborne threats. The Forward Repair Team (Tracked) was also approved, which will enable in-situ repairs during mechanized operations, ensuring that equipment remains operational in diverse conditions.

For the Indian Coast Guard, three significant acquisitions have been authorized: Dornier 228 aircraft, Next Generation Fast Patrol Vessels, and Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels. The Dornier 228 aircraft will work on the Coast Guard’s surveillance. The new patrol vessels, designed for high operational performance in rough weather, will boost the Coast Guard’s ability to patrol maritime zones, conduct search and rescue missions, and perform disaster relief operations.

Indigenous Focus

The Defence Ministry emphasized that 99% of the approved procurement costs will be sourced from indigenous suppliers under the Buy (Indian) and Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) categories. ​​This emphasis on local production fits perfectly with the government’s push to boost self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
