History of Adani Enterprises Limited

Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), a flagship company under the Adani Group, was incorporated on March 2, 1993. The company has built several unicorns, Adani Power, Adani Transmission, Adani Ports & SEZ, Adani Total Gas and Adani Green Energy. In 1994, Adani Enterprises released its IPO of 12,61,900 shares and was listed on BSE and NSE.  

The company has been one of the contributors to building a better tomorrow for India. The company has invested in a wide range of industries and sectors, including green hydrogen, materials like copper and PVC, roads, airport management, solar manufacturing, defence, data centres, mining, water infrastructure, edible oils, etc.  As of March 31, 2023, AEL has about 2,140 employees, of which 34% are engineers, Chartered Accountants and other professionals. The company has a global presence in regions like South Africa, the USA, Australia, etc. 

In 2019, the company was recognised as the 2nd largest IRM player in the world. In 2021, it was also honoured in the ‘Environment protection’ category at the Greentech Safety & Environment Awards. 

Business Segments of Adani Enterprises Limited 

The company’s business portfolio includes energy and utilities, transport and logistics and emerging businesses. They are involved in various sectors, including: 

  • Mining – The company is involved in coal mining and supply. They import coal and practise responsible mining. The company contributes to domestic coal production and has a diverse global supplier base in various coal-rich regions, such as the USA, Australia, South Africa, and Russia.
  • Edible Oil and Foods – The company entered the FMCG sector through their joint venture Adani Wilmar Limited (AWL) between the Adani Group and Wilmar International Limited – Singapore. AWL is a publicly listed company in India that offers edible oils, basmati rice, wheat flour, soya chunks, sugar, besan, soaps, etc.
  • Airports – The company is into civil aviation through their subsidiary company Adani Airport Holdings Limited. They are into the operation, management, and development of airports in India, including Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Mangaluru, Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram and Jaipur.   
  • Data Centres – AEL is the only company in India with the inherent ability to build Data centres. They build data centres that provide seamless, uninterrupted data consumption and storage.
  • Defence and Aerospace – Adani Defence and Aerospace Global works with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and the Indian Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to manufacture unmanned aerial systems, air defence guns, submarines, fighter aircraft, missiles, helicopters, and small arms. 
  • Road, Metro and Rail – AEL is into the road, metro and rail sector by developing national expressways, highways, tunnels, railways, metro-rail, etc.
  • Solar Manufacturing – Adani Solar is a Solar PV manufacturing company in India that produces polysilicon, metallurgical grade silicon, ingots, cells, wafers, and modules and ancillaries like Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), glass, back sheets, junction boxes and aluminium frames.
  • Water – The company is into developing and rehabilitating sewage treatment plants and their associated infrastructure.

There are over 150 subsidiary companies under Adani Enterprises, and a few of them include:

  • Adani Airport Holdings:  Adani Airports is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AEL that oversees ~23%+ passenger traffic in India. They serve about 300 million consumers through airport infrastructure. 
  • Adani Cement: Adani forayed into the cement sector by acquiring a 63.15% stake in Ambuja Cements Limited and a 56.69% stake in ACC Limited. Both of these companies are publicly listed. 
  • Adani Agri Fresh Limited: This first-moving business invests in organised apple sourcing, storage and marketing. 

The company has entered into a joint venture with EdgeConnex and formed AdaniConnex to build data centres nationwide.
