There are fourteen scheduled holidays and six extended weekends in the 2021 calendar when trading in BSE and NSE would remain close. Extended weekends happen when the holiday falls, either on Friday or Monday. Saturdays and Sundays are the weekly offs. The first week of April was an extended holiday for the market.

The next extended weekend will fall on the second week of September, for Ganesh Chaturthi on September 10. Besides, Dusshera, Diwali Balipatiprada, and Guru Nanak Jayanti also fall on Fridays, respectively, on October 15, November 5, and November 19.

In comparison, 2020 had fewer market holidays at 12, but it had nine extended weekends. In April, D-street will also remain closed on April 14 on account of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti and April 21 for Ram Navami.

March and April are always crucial for investors as the first indicates the ending of a financial year, and the latter announces the beginning. Experts predict the market to remain choppy as investors gauge the impact of the second wave of COVID on the economy. Analysts have advised investors to stay calm and play along with the market. It is an opportunity to accumulate quality stocks on the decline to build a robust portfolio.

Market holidays And Trading

Market holidays are the days when no trading take place. But it doesn’t mean that you need to hit the pause button of your trading activities. There are trading opportunities in every condition, including market holidays. As the market never sleeps, it still makes moves during the holidays. It will take trained eyes to discover opportunities during the days of non-action.

What are stock market holidays?

At the beginning of each year, all major exchanges, including BSE and NSE, release a list of market holidays when trading will remain closed. You can find the list of market holidays of 2021 here.

These days are major religious events and days of importance, like Republic Day or Independence Day of India. Apart from trading holidays, there are also clearance holidays when clearing houses remain closed. It means for the trades happening on these days delivery occurs on the next working day. If you are a trader, keeping the holiday lists handy will improve your chances of setting up a successful trade.

Experienced traders plan to trade around these days to avoid heavy swings in their profit outcome. But what to do on a trading holiday?

These days allow you to catch up with other important things like doing research, learning the market, gaining insights, reevaluating your goals, or weeding your watchlist.

If you are a full-time trader, it may be hard to find time to do the above things on a busy day. But during a market holiday, you can take a break from the madness and look deep into your action and plan a better strategy to move ahead.
