We have all heard of trading holidays, but did you know that there is also something called a clearing and settlement holiday that is different from a trading holiday. For example, you can have trading even on a clearing holiday. The only difference is that the clearing and settlement of transactions executed on that date will not happen on the same day. Instead the clearing settlement will be clubbed with the next clearing and settlement date.

For the year 2018, there are 16 trading holidays falling on week days and in addition there are 4 clearing settlement holidays. On these 4 days when there is a clearing holiday but no trading holiday, the clearing and settlement will be clubbed with the next day settlement. Trading holidays have an impact on your rolling settlement definition. When you get credit into your demat account on T+2 days, then Saturdays, Sundays and other trading holidays are excluded from this definition of T+2.
It needs to be remembered that the currency trading and debt market trading on the NSE and the BSE will not function on clearing and settlement holidays. On these last four days above, the equity and F&O trading will function but currency trading and debt trading will remain shut. There is a short Mahurat Trading for about an hour on the day of Laxmi Puja, which marks the beginning of the new Samvat Year for the traditional stock market community.
