About Indraprastha Gas

History of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL)

Incorporated in 1998, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) is a City Gas Distribution Company (CGD). IGL is a joint venture between GAIL (India) Ltd and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. 

In 1999, the company took over the Delhi City Gas Distribution Project from GAIL (India) Limited. The project started by laying the network for distributing natural gas in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi to consumers in the domestic, commercial and transport sectors. The company aims to offer natural gas in the entire capital region.

In 2003, the company launched its IPO and got listed on the stock exchanges. In 2004, the company unveiled its first online CNG station in Delhi. In 2007, the company commenced CNG Project activities in Greater Noida and got government clearance for city gas distribution in Noida. In 2009, IGL started piped natural gas supply in Noida. After a decade, in 2019, the company obtained a city gas licence for Hapur. 

As of March 2023, the company has 97 lakh kg of CNG compression capacity per day, 23.70 lakh domestic customers, and 792 CNG stations. 

Business Segments of Indraprastha Gas Limited 

  • CNG: Under this segment, the company supplies CNG, a substitute for petrol, diesel, etc. The company provides CNG at 792 stations located in Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Hamirpur, Shamli, Fatehpur, Meerut, Kanpur, Noida, Rewari, Karnal, Kaithal, Hapur, Gurugram, Delhi and Greater Noida. 
  • Piped Natural Gas (PNG) (Domestic): Under this, the company procures PNG from the oil or gas wells and transports it through the pipeline network nationwide. This is supplied to domestic households. 
  • PNG (Commercial): Under this segment, the company supplies PNG to restaurants, hotels, malls, hospitals, commercial complexes, educational institutions and religious institutions in and around Delhi-NCR.  
  • PNG (Industrial): The company supplies PNG to industries, including metal, textiles, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, chemical, packing, auto and ancillary industries. This PNG is used in these industries for various purposes. 

As of March 31, 2023, there are no subsidiaries of Indraprastha Gas Limited. The company has 2 associate companies as follows:

  • Central U.P. Gas Limited (CUGL): This company is involved in the City Gas Distribution in Jhansi, Kanpur, Unnao and Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. IGL holds 50% of the paid-up equity share capital of CUGL.
  • Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL): This company is engaged in City Gas Distribution in Pune, Chinchwad, Pimpri, Talegaon, Hinjewadi, Chakan, etc. IGL holds 50% of the paid-up equity share capital of MNGL.
