Within just 3 months of its launch on August 15, 2025, the FASTag annual pass has accounted for 12% of all trips on Indian national highways. With a one-time payment of ₹3,000, it allows up to 200 toll-free journeys, making it an economical solution for frequent commuters by reducing the cost per toll to only ₹15.
Introduced as a convenience and cost-saving tool, the FASTag annual pass has quickly gained popularity. In October alone, over 433 lakh trips were made using the pass. In contrast, regular FASTag usage stood at 3,609 lakh for the same month.
This means the annual pass captured about 11% of total usage. Moving into November, the daily usage volume increased to an average of 16 lakh trips, up from 14 lakh in October, raising its share to 12% of total highway trips.
With ₹3,000 covering 200 trips annually, the pass effectively reduces average toll costs to ₹15 per trip, much lower than standard rates. Given the nationwide implementation of FASTag systems, this low-cost, pre-paid option offers significant savings to high-frequency private car users who might otherwise incur higher monthly expenses under the pay-per-use model.
Currently, it is available only to passenger vehicle owners. High-usage groups such as commercial vehicles and taxis remain ineligible. Also, frequent users travelling short distances often use localised toll passes, further limiting the audience for the national annual pass.

While the volume of trips has grown, toll revenue has declined slightly. October collections stood at ₹6,685 crore, a drop from ₹7,053 crore in August. This dip occurred despite festive travel boosts. The reduced per-trip charge from the pass likely contributed to this marginal fall, even as total volume remained high.
The FASTag annual pass has quickly captured a sizeable share of highway trip volume. While it provides affordability and value for many private vehicle owners, growth may stabilise as most eligible frequent travellers have already made the switch. With commercial vehicle exclusion, there are natural limitations ahead for further expansion.
