Pune’s public transport system is set for a significant upgrade with the Centre approving the procurement of 1,000 electric buses under the PM E-DRIVE (Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement) scheme.
The decision marks a major boost for the city’s bus operator, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML), and aligns with the government’s broader push for clean and sustainable mobility.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy has granted final approval for PMPML’s proposal, which was actively pursued by Union Minister and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol. The ₹ scheme focuses on enabling affordable, eco-friendly and efficient public transport systems across major urban centres.
Currently, PMPML operates around 2,000 buses, including nearly 750 owned vehicles and the rest run through private contractors. With Pune’s rapid urban expansion, officials estimate that a fleet of 3,000 buses will be required to meet future commuter demand. The new allotment of electric buses is expected to significantly bridge this gap while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The introduction of the 1,000 e-buses is expected to enhance commuter convenience, decongest roads, and contribute to Pune’s carbon reduction targets. The addition will also complement the city’s growing metro network, currently spanning 32 kilometres, with ongoing work on the Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi corridor and other approved extensions.
The move aligns with India’s broader focus on sustainable and integrated urban development under the government’s clean mobility initiatives, expected to set a benchmark for other tier-1 cities.
